Abstract

"In the Lobby" piece on Governor John Baldacci, pointing to the recent shutdown at the Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Old Town as another failure of Baldacci's job creation promises. On March 16, Georgia-Pacific announced it was closing the mill and four wood-chipping plants, putting 450 people out of work. Two years ago, Baldacci saved the mill from a shutdown by arranging a controversial state buyout of Georgia-Pacific's waste dump. Baldacci's persistent unpopularity makes him vulnerable in the upcoming gubernatorial election. With comments by Paul Schroeder and Debbie Gibbs, activists in the Bangor-are citizens' group We the People; Rep. Joanne Twomey, D-Biddeford; and Pat LaMarche, a Green Independent candidate for governor.
