Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece predicting, in tongue-in-cheek style, that this year's gubernatorial debates will be lively due to independent candidates John Michael of Auburn and Philip NaPier of Windham. Michael is a former Democratic state representative who was censured by the state House in 2001 and banned from the state Senate after a profanity-laced tirade against two legislators. Michael is running as a "pro-Christ, pro-life conservative," though he consistently voted pro-choice while in the legislature. NaPier is a retired IRS agent who was arrested in 1995 for threatening Windham police with a gun. His platform calls for pardoning all felons, encouraging convicted criminals to move to Maine, banning lawyers from serving as judges, and abolishing the state income tax.
