Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on the state Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices, which recently ruled that political advertisements that don't expressly advocate for or against someone's election are not really ads, but merely expressions of interest in a topic of general concern. As such, those ads do not trigger a provision in the state's Clean Election Law providing matching funds for publicly funded candidates. The commission overruled its staff on the issue, which had analyzed a television ad by the Republican Governors Association and concluded it was promoting Chandler Woodcock's candidacy. Green Independent gubernatorial candidate Pat LaMarche has appealed the commission's decision.
