Abstract

"This Just In" piece on the October 31 ruling by the Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices dismissing a complaint by independent gubernatorial candidate Barbara Merrill. Merrill complained that Patricia Eltman, a paid advisor to the national Democratic Governors Association (DGA), was improperly coordinating the DGA's work with Gov. John Baldacci's re-election campaign. The ruling means that Merrill and other clean election candidates are not eligible for matching funds for hundreds of thousands of dollars spent by the DGA to buy ads supporting Baldacci.
