Abstract

"This Just In" piece on Farmington native Chester Greenwood, who invented the earmuffs in 1873. The Greenwood Champion Ear Protector, as the muff was originally called, soon grew in popularity. Eventually, Greenwood had a factory that was producing more then 400,000 earmuffs a day. Each year, Farmington honors its native son, who also invented the wide-bottom tea kettle, the steel-tooth rake, and a version of the mechanical mousetrap. Chester Greenwood Day will be celebrated in Farmington on December 1.
