Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece commenting on the State Planning Office's recent decision to redefine the word "tourist." Mainers who travel within the state will no longer count as tourists for the purposes of calculating the state's advertising budget. Every year, the state budgets 5 percent of the proceeds from the meals-and-lodging tax to fund advertising to attract tourists. That comes to an annual outlay of more than $8 million. This recalculation reduces the annual take from tourists by about 35 percent, according to the Maine Office of Tourism.
