Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece on illegal immigration, noting that the real reason legal or illegal aliens come to Maine is to get driver's licenses. Robert O'Connell, director of licensing services at the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles is the subject of an internal investigation for his alleged role in encouraging Niall Clarke to come to Maine to get a license. Clarke, who is Irish and was living in Boston legally, was having a hard time getting a Massachusetts license. On O'Connell's suggestion, Clarke came to Maine and obtained a license, even though he was not a Maine resident, and his visa was scheduled to expire in two weeks. Clarke then used his license to buy a handgun. He held up a Bangor bank, a crime for which he was sentenced to ten years in federal prison.
