Abstract
The National Association for the Advancement of colored People (NAACP) recently organized three inmate political-education sessions at the Maine State Prison. Rachel Talbot Ross, president of the Portland NAACP chapter, said the state had made it a struggle to arrange the voter-registration drive. As part of the event, and after protests from the press, eight reporters were allowed free access to interview some prisoners. Portland Phoenix reporter Lance Tapley said that it has been since late 2006 when he was last allowed unmonitored and uncensored interviews with prisoners.
