Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Michael Heath of the Maine Christian Civic League and Paul Volle of the Christian Coalition of Maine, the leaders of two religious organizations who are continuing their war against gays in Maine with a new battle to deny them domestic partnership benefits. At issue is domestic partnership benefits for unmarried heterosexual couples and gay couples and, specifically a new legislative bill, LD 1703, An Act to Ensure Access to Health Insurance, sponsored by Rep. Ben Dudley, D-Portland, that would make it easier for small businesses to offer such benefits to employees who fall within those categories. The State Employee Health Commission and the King administration have both approved the measure. It is anticipated that Heath and Volle will attempt to force a referendum that will make it illegal to recognize any kind of relationship in Maine other than marriage between a man and a woman.
