Abstract

Long article in which the authors offer five reasons why an early replacement should be found for Sally Sutton, the executive director of Maine Civil Liberties Union, who resigned on Nov. 26. Civil liberties are seen as threatened by President Bush's order establishing military tribunals to try suspected terrorists; the holding, sometimes without charges, of 1,200 foreigners; the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act, giving government unprecedent access to private communications; and U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft's attack on state mandated initiatives like Oregon's physician-assisted suicide and on California's medical marijuana act, and perhaps on Maine's medical marijuana act, as well.
