Abstract

"politics and other mistakes" piece on a proposal by Maine's Passamaquoddy Indian tribe and Penobscot Nation to establish a gambling casino in southern Maine. If the casino legislation drafted by Tom Tureen, attorney for the tribes, is approved by the Legislature in 2003 and signed by the next governor, it will specify that nobody else can open a gambling emporium anywhere in Maine. With a recap of similar legislation sought unsuccessfully by the late Joe Ricci, the former owner of the Scarborough Downs race track.
