Abstract
"this just in" piece on the Stone Soup Cafe in Portland's Bramhall Square, which is closing so the Preble Street Resource Center, which ran the cafe, can increase the training capacity of its kitchen. The center 's food-service education program is designed to give homeless and low-income people viable job skills. Mark Swann, the center's executive director, says the program has been very successful and the job placement rate six months after graduation is 60 percent, compared to 30 percent nationally. And 67 percent of the center's working graduates make at least a "wage standard," which is $8 an hour in Portland, compared to 19 percent nationally.
