Abstract

"this just in" piece on the changing campaign of Democrat Chellie Pingree, who is seeking to replace U.S. senator Susan Collins, R-Maine. Pingree was focused on federal legislation that would mirror her Maine Rx program. But the U.S. Supreme Court recently decided to hear the pharmaceutical industry's appeal of a lower-court ruling upholding the legality of Maine Rx, which effectively neutralizes it as a campaign issue, as the court could take up to a year to issue its opinion. In light of the recent Enron and WorldCom debacles, Pingree has now switched her focus to the Maine Disclosure Law, a 1998 piece of her own legislation that addresses corporate accountability. Her new "Common Sense Agenda" is a five-point platform focusing on strengthening corporate disclosure, enhancing corporate oversight, protecting pensions and 401(k)s, criminalizing corporate fraud, and closing corporate loopholes that allow overseas tax shelters for major companies, among other things.
