Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Maine's nursing shortage. Hospitals and colleges are creating incentive programs to bring new nurses into the field, to lure older nurses back , and to keep the current working nurse force. The state's nursing shortage is unprecedented, even though Maine went from having 43 hospitals in 1996 to 39 in 2002, and there are 11 percent fewer licensed hospital beds in the state than there were a decade ago. Maine's 13 nursing programs produced 425 graduates last year, well below what experts say is needed to keep up with the projected demand.
