Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Portland's Center for Cultural Exchange, which is trying to represent the musical heritage of all of Portland's people. There are over 40 different languages spoken in Portland, and trying to represent each one by a single broad category called "world music" is not easy. The center grew out of the House Island Project, a concert promotion involving local ethnic communities organized by Phyllis O'Neill and Bau Graves, who are now the center's co-directors.
