Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a sudden surge in the number of literary events being hosted in Portland, a city of about 60,000, which is gaining the ability to attract a variety of authors beyond its market size. In the past few weeks, there have been at least eight different nationally published authors who have come to read in Portland, thanks to the success of three independently owned bookshops, including Longfellow Books, Casco Bay Books, and Books, Etc., and a very active "Brown Bag" reading series at the Portland Public Library.
