Abstract
Portland and Manchester, NH, might compete in 2008 over the Red Sox affiliation with the Portland Sea Dogs. Manchester has experienced strong growth, has the low-fare airline Southwest Airlines (although Portland just landed jetBlue), is half Portland's distance to Boston, larger in size, has the new Verizon Wireless Arena, and is in a tax-free state. Although Manchester has grown beyond its mill-town legacy, it doesn't have Portland's natural amenities, like Casco Bay and the coast.
