Abstract
The [Peaks] Island Independence Committee organized to secede from Portland after taxes skyrocketed following the city's property-tax revaluation in the early 2000s. Secessionists and city officials disagree with each other's financial analysis of how an independent island would affect islanders and the city. The Solutions not Secession Committee is fighting the proposal, and spokesperson Chris Hoppin has asked the city to do more for Peaks Island as a way to defuse the plan. Even if the Legislature passes a secession bill, Gov. John Baldacci might still veto it. With comments from several islanders.
