Abstract
In the 1930s, George Herman "Babe" Ruth befriended L.L. Bean. By this time the Red Sox player had been traded to New York and had become a summer fixture in Maine. Once in the mid-1930s, when residents lined the Bath route of Ruth's motorcade, he stopped to sign autographs. His first and favorite major-league manager was William F. Carrigan of Lewiston, who hosted teams at his waterfront camp on Annabessacook Lake. Carrigan also took Ruth to a family-owned spot on Cousins Island.
