Abstract

"CuiScene" piece on the less well-known edibles harvested from Maine waters, including sea urchins, seaweed, eels, periwinkles and more. In 2006 these oddball edibles accounted for 7.5 percent (20 million pounds) of all the commercial seafood landed in the state. Roughly a third was sold to Korea and Japan, and local interest has been growing steadily. With comments by Atchan Tamaki, president of ISF Seafood; Rob Odlin, an urchin diver from South Portland; Shep Erhart, founder of Maine Coast Sea Vegetables; and Tollef Olson, owner of Ocean Approved LLC.
