Abstract
Since the 1850s, the families of Gail Tobey, 62, and her husband, Dennis, have had homesteads on Little Yarmouth Island off Cundy's Harbor, where just one other family lives year-round. Daughter Teresa Brockett, 43, runs Teresa's in Bath. On Matinicus, the most far-flung of Maine's islands, Bill Hoadley, 70, is one of 66 year-round residents. With details on Hoadley's typically pragmatic holiday rituals, Tobey family holidays past and present, and Christmas celebrations of North Haven native Greg Quinn, 25, whose ancestors have lived on or near the island since the 1700s.
