Abstract

The Maine Warden Service, in an increasingly technological age, answers some excessive calls for search and rescue. Over 6,000 people have been rescued in the U.S. thanks to Personal Locator Beacons, but over 98 percent of all PLB distress calls since 2003 have been non-distress or false alerts. None of these alerts took place in Maine, where hiker unpreparedness or inexperience is usually the issue.
