Abstract

Fortune Rock is a George Howe-designed home cantilevered on concrete bridge trusses above Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island. It was built for artist Clara Fargo Thomas, and its design was radical for the day. It remains one of the finest modern homes in Maine. The author met Norman Mailer at the home when Mailer was renting the house in the 1970s.
