Abstract
Several communities in Maine vie to be considered the first place in the United States to see the sunrise. Contenders include Mars Hill, the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, Lubec, and Eastport. According to records from the U.S. Naval Observatory, Cadillac Mountain can lay claim to the title but only between October 7 to March 6. Eastport is the easternmost city in the country, while Lubec is the easternmost town in the U.S. West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec, the easternmost point in the country, can claim the earliest sunrise from March 7 to March 24 and September 29 to October 6 and Mars Hill is the first place to see the sun between March 25 and September 18.
