Abstract

Brief profile of Chansonetta Stanley, the younger sister of the Stanley brothers who manufactured the steam-powered vehicles known as Stanley Steamers. Chansonetta was a photographer whose images were admired by Berenice Abbott. Her photographs of rural New England, many of them taken while she and her daughter Dorothy traveled around by car, were staged but not sentimental, some of them meticulously colorized so as to appear almost like paintings.
