Abstract
Article on the restaurant scene in the Portland area, noting that 2003 was a tough year for the industry, and commenting on the important role of chef-owned bistros in Greater Portland. In 2001, the National Restaurant Association named Portland one of 50 American cities noted for the depth and variety of choice for dining out. Most observers agree that the restaurant market remains healthy in the city. With a focus on comments by David Gooch, long-time operator of the former Snow Squall in South Portland; Natasha Durham, formerly of Natasha's, who has launched Mims on the Portland waterfront; and Mary Paine of Pepperclub.
