Abstract

Brief description of the wisteria tree that blooms every May at Portland poet John Neal's house at 173-175 State Street in Portland. Architect Robert Armitage, who owns the John Neal house, suspects that his grandfather, a gardening enthusiast, may have planted the tree sometime after the 1940s. When Armitage had the tree cut back in the early 1990s, area plant lovers went crazy with worry about the tree.
