Abstract
Profile of Robert Norell, a descendant of the Wabanaki Indians, the first natives of Portland who fought in defense of their land in the 1689 Battle of Deering Oaks, one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the French and Indian War. Norell grew up in a foster home and began searching for his family roots once he moved out. His lifelong dedication has been to piece together bits of the early Native American legacy in Portland, and he now creates art to tell it. With a description of Portland and Casco Bay prior to European contact, as seen through the eyes of Norell.
