Abstract

Profile of former Maine senator George Mitchell, with a focus on his new role as chairman of the board for the Walt Disney Company. Mitchell, 71, credits his "intellectual curiosity" as one of the reasons for his success in life. Harold Pachios, a partner at the Portland law firm of Preti Flaherty and a close friend of Mitchell, believes the secret to Mitchell's success is his versatility. The position at Disney has proved demanding as the company recovers from financial difficulties and controversy over CEO Michael Eisner's forced departure as chairman. Company policy will force Mitchell to retire the Disney chairmanship next year when he turns 72.
