Abstract
Portland was home to a Winter Carnival during the 1920s and 1930s; and in 1924, 5,000 people gathered on the Western Prom to witness ski jumps high over St. John Street, toboggan races, and the end of a Maine Iditarod. An ice castle was built at Deering Oaks to showcase the King and Queen of the Carnival. As late as 1934, the State Theatre and a local paper sponsored a Winter Carnival at Deering Oaks.
