Abstract
Profile of George Whitman, 93, who, in 1951, bought the famous Left Bank bookstore Shakespeare & Co. in Paris, in sight of Notre Dame. The store was a destination for literary greats from James Joyce to Allen Ginsberg. Whitman used to spend summers at his grandmother's home in Norway, Maine; and his great-uncle, whose library he inherited, was pastor of All Souls Church in Portland and president of Westbrook Seminary. Whitman hosts visiting writers in the three apartments he owns above the bookstore.
