Abstract

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is soliciting bids for 7 million pounds of wild Maine blueberries for the nation's school lunch program, more than double the 3 million pounds the government purchased last year. Last year's bumper crop of 84.2 million pounds and this year's crop of 65 million pounds, as well as good harvests in Nova Scotia and Quebec, have driven prices down and filled cold storage facilities, making the government's announcement most welcome.
