Abstract

The Penobscot Indians are claiming ownership of the islands above Greater Northern Paper Co.'s hydroelectric dams on the Penobscot River, a move which could give the tribe a say in dam relicensing matters currently before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Great Northern contends that the tribe surrendered all rights to the islands when it settled the landmark land claims case with the federal and state governments in 1980. Details, related article.
