Abstract
Maine's 17 million acres of woods make it the most heavily forested state in America. As farms were abandoned, the state has grown to be 90 percent forested, far more than it was a century ago. Mechanical harvesting, clear-cutting, and interstate and international ownership have changed the North Woods industry, which, unlike that of western states, is privately owned. Details.
