Abstract
Ed Grove, of Brownfield, is one of Maine's 14 remaining blacksmiths. There were over 1,000 in 1857, when Maine trades from shipping to logging relied on black-smithing every day. Grove makes functional household items. Also profiled are Gary Thorpe, an artist blacksmith; and Bud Oggier, 80, Maine's most venerated blacksmith.
