Abstract

An article on John Martovich, a piano technician at Portland Piano Exchange and Violin Shop. He initially studied chemistry, intending to go into medicine. He studied in Bar Harbor with classical guitarist Kevin Morse, and after five years, took up the violin because he loved the music written for the instrument. When he moved to Portland five years ago, he went to music school at the University of Maine, but realized that what he wanted was the "antithesis of the pedagogue." He compares his repair of a cello to performing surgery, satisfying both his musical and his medical bents.
