Abstract
Frank Bowie, 79, is the last dairy farmer in Durham, and has six milking cows. He is helped by his 89-year-old sister, Dorothy, who lives across the driveway from Frank and his wife, Lucille. Less than a decade ago, Bowie Farm had 50 head of stock. Frank also has a dozen head of young stock and a half dozen calves. He served in the Legislature for two terms and in town government. His father Leon started the farm, and his many siblings live in the area. Frank's customers drive from as far as Freeport for his unprocessed milk. Frank has survived by working to pay off his debts quickly and by diversifying. His son Eric recently bought 77 acres from his father for a tree nursery, but the future of the farm is uncertain.
