Abstract

A year after the Reiche branch of the Portland Public Library escaped closure due to tight city finances, West End residents again fear the proposed city budget will threaten the branch. This week a draft version of the library's budget was rejected by City Manager Joe Gray, who said the library should be flat-funded. Councilor Dave Marshall said the library is being "secretive" about a long term viability plan for the six-branch system, which library trustees were asked to craft last year.
