Abstract
The Portland Public Library kicked off a membership drive for the Friends of the Portland Public Library yesterday. Ted Spitzer, president of the nascent group, says their fundraising goals are for ongoing projects and support unrelated to the $7 million renovation underway at the main branch. The library has not had a Friends group since the 1980s. This group will be a nonprofit entity, independent of library trustees, and with a separate board. In the first year, the group hopes to attract several hundred members and take over the operation of the library's book sale from staff.
