Abstract

The Maine Farm Bureau and some of the state's leading agricultural producers are considering submitting legislation next year that would give the industry the right to sue anyone who slanders their product. Six state have passed agricultural disparagement laws, and legislation is pending in five others. The bills are a reaction to the 1989 Alar pesticide scare that caused Washington apple growers to lose $130 million.
