Abstract

Environmental activists are questioning conclusions made by Maine Department of Conservation Commissioner Ron Lovaglio about the impact of the Maine Forest Practices Act. A new report to the Maine Legislature says that clear-cutting has declined from pre-FPA levels of 145,000 acres annually to around 51,000 acres annually, leading Lovaglio to conclude that the FPA has effectively reduced the size of clearcuts. Activists say the decline was primarily due to the end of spruce budworm salvage operations around 1990 Details.
