Abstract

Maine had a meat inspection program from 1967 until it was abolished by the state Legislature in 1981. Legislation to re-establish the Maine Meat Act won support from the Maine State Grange, the Maine Farm Bureau and the Association of Conservation Districts. The Maine Department of Agriculture opposed the bill because of its anticipated cost. Supporters of the bill say state inspection of meat is more convenient and affordable for small producers.
