Abstract

The Federal Trade Commission has filed a complaint against New Balance, a shoe manufacturer based in New England, charging that its labeling and advertising claims are false and misleading. New Balance, which employs 600 at two Maine plants, puts "Made in the U.S.A." labels on shoes assembled in New England, even though they contain soles made in China. A federal hearing on the matter has been scheduled for July 17, and the outcome may set a precedent for all industries using the "Made in the U.S.A." label on products manufactured with foreign components.
