Abstract
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection since 1990 has eliminated its lake studies division, Lake Restoration and Protection Fund and the bulk of its diagnostic studies and regular monitoring program. As lake management issues grow more complex and the agencies charged with their resolution face continuing budget pressure, a new management strategy has surfaced to link public and private, state and local bodies in a cooperative effort. The Great Ponds Task Force will will attempt to develop a coordinated, long-term management strategy, and will address access, law enforcement, recreation, safety and other lake issues. Details, related article on the death and rebirth of Pattee's Pond in Winslow.
