Abstract

Bowater Inc. says the heavy financial losses the company sustained in the early 1990s has postponed a plan to build a $550 million paper machine in Millinocket by 1997. The machine was crucial to the mill's modernization and was a focus of the relicensing of Bowater's Penobscot River dams. Demand for the company's main product, newsprint, is strong and prices are up, but Bowater has no major investment projects on schedule for its two Maine mills. Details.
