Abstract
Thunnus thynnus, the Atlantic bluefin tuna, is the largest, swiftest and most valuable fish in the North Atlantic waters. The giant bluefin is the prize of the Japanese sushi bar, and commands prices that last year averaged $10 per pound and this year averaged $15 per pound. The highest price paid for a tuna in Maine this summer was $64 per pound, and with a fish weighing close to 500 pounds tuna fishermen are fortune hunters in search of a $30,000 prize. Reports suggest that the Atlantic bluefin population has declined by 80 to 90 percent in the past 20 years, from 220,000 fish to as few as 20,000. Details.
