Abstract

The Searsport Water District this month will abandon Halfmoon Pond, which straddles the Searsport-Prospect town line, as a water source, and will switch to a groundwater source in Prospect. The move from surface water to groundwater is normally considered the easiest way to comply with provisions of the 1988 federal Safe Drinking Water Act. The shift to the Prospect aquifer, which by some estimates might be one-third to one-half the volume available in the 176-acre pond, might be putting economic development for the region in jeopardy.
