Abstract

The Maine Legislative Council last week approved the introduction of an emergency bill calling for the authorization of $100 million in bonds for construction on the Maine Turnpike. State senator Jeffrey Butland proposed a new turnpike widening referendum last winter, but failure to attract the support of the Maine Turnpike Authority led to "An Act to Widen the Maine Turnpike," which calls for studies and a report to the Legislature. Some observers say it's not just a matter of when the Turnpike gets widened, but how much effort people want to expend to slow down congestion before widening becomes inevitable. Details, progress report on alternatives to widening, related editorial.
