Abstract

Stone and Webster Environmental Services has completed a draft environmental impact statement that says removing the Edwards Dam on the Kennebec River in Augusta would impose a continuing annual cost of $1.1 million. The report, part of dam relicensing proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is seen as setback for environmentalists. The report gives little credence to assertions that removing the dam would greatly aid fish spawning, but says increased recreational opportunities would result.
