Abstract

Advanced communications technology in Maine's public schools and libraries will be funded through two sources, with the funds going to two interrelated programs. A five-year $20-million fund accumulated from reductions in Nynex's in-state telephone toll rates is designed to provide Internet access for every public school and library in Maine. A $15 million bond approved last November will be spent on Asynchronous Transfer Mode equipment, which allows for interactive television as well as enhanced Internet capabilities. Nynex was the only company to submit a proposal for the ATM contract, and competitors have voiced concern that the state might be moving toward granting Nynex an Internet monopoly. Details.
